In Mondstadt, there are humans and then after that, only Gods. Liyue does things differently as there’s actually a mid-point between Archons and lowly human beings. They are called Adepti or Adeptus if singular. They’re introduced like special guests and throughout the story quests and other missions, there are several of them.
Some Adepti are even playable characters but who and what exactly is this unique group? More importantly, what is their role in Liyue? It’s easy to miss these things in the game what with Paimon being a blabbermouth and all. So if you want to know just how influential and important the Adepti are to the game, then these facts about them should help.
10 The Adepti Consist Of Gods And Magical Beings
Adepti is actually the name of a group or designation of people who are a tier above mortals but a tier below Archons. They’re not one race of beings; it’s more of a collective term for them because they’re all so varied and distinct that it’s probably difficult to create a specific racial label for each and every one of them for story purposes.
In actuality, they consist of several types of Gods and magical beings. Some of them are probably in the same or similar ballpark as that of Morax, as he’s also considered an Adeptus. All in all, they usually immortal and more powerful than humans or other mortal beings.
9 The Chinese Translation Adds More Distinction For Them
The English translation for the game is the culprit for the collective term: Adepti. The Chinese text actually puts more emphasis on the different types or classifications of Adepti. There are several of them in the game.
Among the most prominent types are immortal persons and immortal beasts. There are Adepti who primarily appear as mythical animals that are also sentient while some Adepti, like Ganyu are half-human, meaning they can interbreed. Other Adepti are mortals who have ascended.
8 The Adepoi’s Origins Are Murky
Where did the Adepti come from? That question will probably breed more of its kind than answers. The simplest explanation is that they’re speculated to hail from Celestia and reside below in Teyvat out of their goodwill or leisure.
That’s why many people from Liyue believe that Adepti will return to Celestia once they die. Whether they’ll be reborn or not is unknown at the moment. In any case, that also makes most Adepti a candidate for Archon-hood, probably depending on their standing with Celestia.
7 Adepti Have A Contract With Morax
Since Morax was pretty much the prime or most powerful Adepti in Liyue back in his heyday, he holds sway over their activities and decisions. That’s why he contracted most of the Adepti in Liyue to help him defend the common folk.
Morax struck a deal with the Adepti to help him fight the demons and the vengeful spirits of the Gods that he vanquished in the Archon War. Right now, they’re still obligated to fulfill this contract.
6 Humans Can Become Adepti
As we mentioned earlier, mortals, meaning even humans, have the chance to become Adepti as well. The process is rather long and arduous though as it requires proving oneself to Celestia, possibly through a series of trials that will likely kill you if you’re unprepared.
However, a wannabe Adeptus can skip that step, assuming their feats are monumental enough to catch Celestia’s attention. If not, then they’ll have to take the trial of Earth and Heaven; the first trial is located in Taishan Mansion in the game while the other location is unknown.
5 Adepti Have Their Own Worshippers
Since many of the Adepti are Gods or lesser Gods, it’s only natural for them to have their own worshippers. Some of them probably even draw their powers from their followers’ faith. An equivalent of the Adepti in Mondstadt, such as Barbatos before he became the Anemo Archon, had his power fueled by a certain clan’s worship.
Hence, it’s not far-fetched for the Adepti of Liyue to prefer a similar setup. Citizens of Liyue even respect and love certain Adepti so much that they dedicated a festival for the deceased Adepti, namely the Lantern Rite Festival.
4 Adepti Can Shapeshift
Most of the traditional Adepti present in the game’s story and quests can be seen in their original form. Beings like Cloud Retainer and Mountain Shaper look like beasts. However, some Adepti prefer to assume a more human form. So it’s pretty clear that they can shapeshift if they want.
The most notable examples of this are Xiao, whose original form looks more demonic, as well as Madame Ping who’s probably closer in appearance to Cloud Retainer or his friends. Zhongli or Morax is also another early example since his original form appears to be that of a serpentine dragon.
3 Adepti Don’t Need Visions
One of the reasons why Adepti are more powerful than mortals and even Vision-user humans is that they don’t exactly need Visions to manipulate elemental energy. They can use one of the seven elements in Teyvat effortlessly.
Many mortals simply assume that Adepti have some sort of “third eye” that gives them innate elemental sight and thus lets them use elements. Some Adepti, however, incorporate a Vision in their paraphernalia when they assume human or mortal forms.
2 Each Adeptus Has Their Own Special Power
Another thing that sets an Adeptus apart from a regular Vision-user is that they have their own special and personalized elemental quirk or ability that they can use on top of their Vision-based skills. The most memorable instance of Adepti flexing such power is during the battle with a released Osial.
Madame Ping, Ganyu, and Xiao all lent their adeptal energy to the Traveler in order to help in the fight against Osial. Madame Ping’s released shockwaves, Ganyu’s gave passive healing, and Xiao’s granted increased movement speed.
1 Adepti Keep To Themselves Mostly
The Adepti were in full swing back in the days of the Archon War and several centuries after it, thanks to the demons and defeated gods who refuse to back down. As time went on, however, their mission to protect Liyue became less urgent.
Nowadays, they mostly keep to themselves in Liyue’s mountains and in their own self-made domains, preferring to remain undisturbed. Though with Morax resigning from his Archon position, their relative peace might soon get disturbed again.
