Like many online RPGs, players start Genshin Impact with the impression that it’s an easy game. How could it be that hard? Most enemies seem like goblin knock-offs from Breath of the Wild that shouldn’t require more than one element. Then they suddenly reach Adventure Rank 30 and realize that all the character-building mistakes and low difficulty they took for granted will blow up in their face.
Because by then, a hideous and unforgiving host of enemies and bosses are waiting in line to make the players their chew toy. In any case, nobody wants to get their butt handed to them by the very enemies that used to be pushovers, so knowing which enemies to avoid or get co-op help with might help. Battle not with these monsters alone, lest they make you their emergency food.
Updated April 26th, 2021 by Sid Natividad: More updates for Genshin Impact means more enemies. These enemies are also no joke. It seems the developers noticed all those flex videos about DPS carries dealing millions of damage. Hence, the difficulty has slowly crept up and the enemies are now more formidable than ever. These additional menaces can ensure that the Traveler’s stay in Teyvat is far from a vacation.
Now that Inazuma is out, the number of formidable opponents you can face in Genshin Impact just skyrocketed. Needless to say, Inazuma is not a walk in the park. The developers have added some menaces in the area, some of which can even kill you in one shot. Rightfully so, we’ve added them in.
20 Perpetual Mechanical Array
- Found in: Inazuma
- Weakness: Elemental reaction teams and shielded players
The latest 40-resin boss in Genshin Impact right now, the Perpetual Mechanical Array bears the flag for the construct enemies. It’s physically resistant, for that matter and even if you manage to bring in an elemental reaction team, this boss has many invincibility phases that let it avoid damage.
Also, once you get it at a certain HP threshold, it will split itself and give out tons of shield to its weak spot. Its most devastating attack is when it turns itself into a sword. This can catch players off-guard with how much damage it does. It can definitely one-shot anyone without any shield.
19 Ruin Sentinels
- Found in: Inazuma
- Weakness: Melt/Vaporize
You don’t even have to fight the Perpetual Mechanical Array to know just how annoying the new Ruin enemies are in the Inazuma update. The northern part of Inazuma houses some Ruin Sentinels or the common enemy version of the Perpetual Mechanical Array and they’re a pain in the temples to fight.
They roam around in packs and will surround their victims and unleash a barrage of attacks. Again, they’re pretty resistant to physical damage so Melt/Vaporize teams are almost mandatory if you want to deal with them fast.
18 Thunderhelm Lawachurl
- Found in: Inazuma
- Weakness: Cryo/Pyro attacks & Shields
Another enemy that can kill your character in a single strike— or in this case, a big leap slam, is Thunderhelm Lawachurl. It’s a Lawachurl but infused with all the wrath of Inazuma’s Electro locale. This big meanie probably spent too much time eating thunderstorms on the third island of Inazuma.
Anyway, the Thunderhelm Lawachurl isn’t that tough or tanky especially against Cryo damage or even Pyro damage. You’ll still have to be wary of its jump attack which is enough to make anyone panic with how much HP it takes off from the target.
17 Abyss Lector
- Found in: Spiral Abyss
- Weakness: Cryo/Pyro attacks mostly
While on the topic of overbearing Electro enemies, the Abyss Lector has been shocking players even before Inazuma dropped. It’s one of the newest Abyss-themed enemies and notably had a spotlight in the story quests.
There, it was even one of the bosses, and rightfully so. Having to fight more than one at a time is a Herculean ordeal since the Abyss Lector’s multiple homing Electro attacks can easily break your shields, leaving your character exposed. At best, you can deal with them using Pyro and Cryo attacks.
16 Abyss Herald
- Found in: Spiral Abyss
- Weakness: Cryo attacks
The Abyss Heralds are the more energetic cousins of the Abyss Lector and while they sport the less menacing Hydro element, they attack so relentlessly that you don’t get many windows for retaliations. It also doesn’t help that they’re way too fast.
Initially, on their first HP bar, they’re pretty manageable. After that, they become whirling tsunamis capable of stunlocking characters. You also have to dodge well, even with a shield, since their attacks shred shields fast. Luckily, they’re always Wet and water freezes fast.
15 Primo Geovishap
- Found in: Liyue
- Weakness: Shielded characters and big-damage Elemental Bursts
The Primo Gevishap is one of the latest additions to the roster of world bosses and it’s a lot less prone to cheesing tactics compared to the Regisvines. This means Geovishap has a huge health pool and thus requires a character that can consistently deal nearly six digits of damage at World Level 8.
Of course, the Geovishap can be more generous than the Regisvines and has a wider assortment of ascension materials to give. Tussling with it in melee or even in ranged combat can be quite a chore though.
14 Childe
- Found in: Liyue
- Weakness: Low HP
Speaking of chores here’s a monumental one. Childe might not look as tough as the Primo Geovishap or even Andrius, but he can catch the players off-guard with his relentless barrage of attacks. Childe does this in both melee and ranged combinations.
To make matters worse, the fight has three phases in which Childe liberally uses his Delusion device in order to get ahead in the fight. His final form can prove a little too much for solo players as it moves fast and can constantly knock back characters.
13 Abyss Mages
- Found in: All of Teyvat
- Weakness: Hydro is weak to Cryo, Pyro is weak to Hydro, Electro is weak to Cryo/Pyro, Cryo is weak to Pyro
As for the most notorious trio in the game, nothing beats the three variants of Abyss Mages, cryo, hydro, and pyro. These three, when grouped together, are a recipe for disaster as they pull all kinds of elemental reaction combos against you.
The hardest part is dealing with them is that your party is never too prepared for shredding their shield. Each elemental shield only has one weakness, and if you don’t have any character in the party capable of dealing with them fast, then prepare for a long toil.
12 Fatui Agent
- Found in: All of Teyvat
- Weakness: Stagger
Fatui Agents are not that tough and don’t exactly have much health so they’re easy to kill. That is until they start going invisible and taking out more than 75 percent of your HP in one dash. If you’re lucky, your character will be left with a sliver of HP.
The best way to deal with these things is to keep pressure on them with claymore users so they don’t get a chance to become invisible. Even then, they have tricks of their own to knock back any melee character looking to one-up them.
11 Frostarm Lawachurl
- Found in: Mondstadt
- Weakness: Pyro attacks/claymore stagger
By far the most troublesome enemy that the Dragonspine update introduced, the Frostarm Lawachurl is a nightmare to deal with for any cryo character. Even pyro characters tend to have a problem with this one as they’re mostly melee-focused, rather than ranged.
The Frostarm Lawachurl’s most devastating attack consists of a dash that leaves behind cryo landmines. Step on one of these landmines and it’s over as there’s a big chance of getting bounced into another landmine back and forth.
10 Geo Hypostasis
- Found in: Liyue
- Weakness: Geo attacks & abilities
Hypostases, in general, are difficult enemies to deal with in Genshin Impact but the nastiest among them all is the Geo Hypostasis. It’s a pain to fight and forces the players to have claymore-users in their party because the Geo Hypostasis generates pillars to stand whereupon it will pelt its victims with nothing relentless attacks.
The only way to deal with this is to take out the pillars one by one or use ranged characters exclusively for the rest of the fight. It just so happens that the Geo Hypostasis’ attacks are the most devastating out of all the hypostases in the game.
9 Electro Hypostasis
- Found in: Mondstadt
- Weakness: Cryo/Pyro attacks
The Electro Hypostasis comes in at a close second to the Geo Hypostasis when it comes to difficulty. It’s one of the most resilient bosses in the game and can keep coming back if players brought in the wrong people in their party.
Apart from having long invulnerability windows, the Electro Hypostasis can keep regenerating its health if players don’t manage to destroy all its electro essence particles. The only way to destroy these particles is with pure elemental attacks from either catalyst users or the Elemental Skill/Burst.
8 Cryo Regisvine
- Found in: Mondstadt
- Weakness: Cryo eye/bulb that’s vulnerable to Pyro damage
Regisvines, like Hypostases, are also necessary for ascending characters and making them more powerful. They do offer a test of strength before this and the harder of the two (cryo and pyro) is the cryo variant which can freeze players and set them up for a world of pain.
Beyond the tendency of the Cryo Regisvine to freeze players in rain or with the right elemental accidents, it’s pretty much the standard Regisvine fare. Not having any bow-user in the party is just asking for a long and lethal endurance fight.
7 Rock Shieldwall Mitachurls
- Found in: All of Teyvat
- Weakness: Claymore attacks
Genshin Impact players likely got their first dose of spiked difficulty when they faced those Wooden Shield Mitachurls. Those brutes that bulldoze the players are no biggie for anyone with a pyro character. However, their bigger cousins, the Rock Shieldwall Mitachurls just don’t care about your pathetic pyrotechnics.
Mitachurls shields don’t burn. So players are gonna have to tough it out and break the shield traditionally like they’re mining high-level ores. Except the ore will frequently run them over. Sometimes off a cliff straight to the depths of Liyue’s rock bottom.
6 Stormterror Dvalin
- Found in: Mondstadt
- Weakness: Ranged damage
After several tries with this boss, it’s clear how to navigate and avoid its most powerful attacks. In fact, Stormterror is quite slow and easily evaded. However, the first time players encounter it can be nerve-wracking.
Stormterror has an alarmingly damaging “floor-is-lava” mechanic that can easily drain the health of anyone who doesn’t know the ins and outs of the fight. Once players know that changing platforms is easy, Stormterror becomes a breeze, pun intended.
5 Fatui Skirmishers
- Found in: All of Teyvat
- Weakness: Crowd control such as Frozen
The Fatui are notorious not just for having a name that’s the sound effect for a spit but also because they’ve been a constant pain in the neck for the Knights of Favonius. The worst of them pester the players with the Fatui Skirmishers.
These usually come in duos where one is an electro-warrior wielding a big hammer and the other is some sort of a chemist-mage that has a cryo gun. Both of them augment each other’s skills and can blindside the players with their regenerative capabilities and sudden invulnerability.
4 Whopperflowers
More annoying than hard, the Whopperflowers are essentially miniature Regisvines as both come in cryo or pyro variants. They’re about as tough as Abyss Mages but those can’t stun-lock the players while dealing excessive elemental damage.
Whopperflowers, especially the pyro variant, can easily whittle down the players’ HP with their bombardment attack with each hit staggering the characters unless a quick evasive dash maneuver is performed. Of course, there’s always the possibility that two or more of them will do that in sync.
3 Oceanid
- Found in: Liyue
- Weakness: Cryo attacks
As for the most irritating boss in Genshin Impact, one of the most popular answers in the community is none other than the eccentric Oceanid. It’s a water spirit boss that loves to shrink its arena and let other summoned spirits do its dirty work.
If players don’t have a viable bow user or a catalyst user with decent range, then they might as well quit since the Oceanid summons bird spirits that are impossible to hit with anything melee. This is one boss that has caused full-party wipes in an online RPG that’s relatively easier than most.
2 Lupus Boreas
- Found in: Mondstadt
- Weakness: Pyro attacks
Speaking of party wipes, Lupus Boreas is another furious weekly boss that doesn’t care about your cryo or anemo characters. Its attacks are fast and big cryo ones that can also freeze players should they accidentally wet themselves with hydro characters… or because Lupus Boreas turns himself invisible.
That’s right, Lupus Boreas has a second phase similar to Dark Souls bosses. He suddenly goes angry and unleashes consecutive attacks while unseen once his health reaches around 50 percent. Afterward, it’s like getting chased by a werewolf in a horror movie.
1 Ruin Hunter
Ruin Guards are generally annoying enough due to their spin attacks but they’re pretty manageable. Their flying variant, the Ruin Hunter, is just straight-up dreadful to fight without ranged characters. That’s because it has a ton of attacks with area damage enough to level Mondstadt.
The Ruin Hunter’s favorite mode of operation is staying levitated and out of reach of melee attacks and most abilities while unleashing nuclear winter on the players. Oh, they do come down to the ground once in a while if they feel like it, but you have to say please and cry hard, harder than when you spent 17k Primogems only to not get Diluc.
