Genshin Impact, the free-to-play anime-style RPG, has made a huge amount of money so far. Having only been released about two months ago, miHoYo’s mobile version of the game has raked in almost $400 million USD.
Originally released on September 28, 2020, Genshin Impact exploded in popularity. It is already being called one of the best mobile game of 2020, as thousands of fans have flocked to it this year. During just the first week of its release, it was downloaded 17 million times and made $60 million USD, and now it has climbing the charts for revenue in spite of being released so late into the year.
From its release on September 28 until now, Genshin Impact has made $393 million on first-party Android and iPhones through the app store, according to mobile market analytics platform Sensor Tower. This doesn’t include third-party Android or any money made on PlayStation or PC. It’s estimated that Genshin Impact has made about $6 million per day on first-party mobile devices, which excludes much of the Chinese Android market, consoles, and computer players.
It is second for earnings across mobile in that time period according to Sensor Tower, beat out only by Honor of Kings. Third in line was PUBG Mobile with $384 million, followed by Pokemon GO at $238 million and Coin Master at $229 million. Mobile games are making a lot of money this year after the coronavirus pandemic left many with a lot of free time. It means many mobile offerings will be pulling in more money than ever, even after a title like Pokemon GO made more than $1 billion in revenue in 2019.
Genshin Impacts’ popularity mainly comes from how well-crafted the game itself is, according to many fans. Between its graphics, interesting characters, mechanics, and responsive updating, Genshin Impact is one of the best co-op, mobile, and RPG games out there right now, and it is the fastest-growing Chinese IP ever.
The game will most likely continue to grow. Between adding new characters, updates, and adjustments like the big recent update 1.1 for Genshin Impact, as well as announced massive expansions to the map and story planned in the near future, there seems to be no end to Genshin Impacts’ potential. Developer miHoYo seems to have figured out the formula for a great RPG that happens to be available on mobile, and that’s great news for its bottom line and future expansions for fans.
Genshin Impact is available for Mobile, PC, and PS4.
