Suddenly, Mareep, perhaps one of the most forgettable Pokémon out there, has become the face that launched 1,000 memes.
The Internet is a weird and wonderful place, isn’t it? Within the space of a few minutes’ worth of social media scrolling in the bathroom, it can both destroy our faith in humanity and build it right back up again. Sometimes, we just don’t acknowledge the incredible power we carry in our pockets.
As easy as it is to become a viral sensation overnight, it’s also very tough to predict what’s going to take off and what isn’t. Great memes are born from the most unlikely places, and viral photos can emerge from simple debates over the color of a dress. The humble little Electric-type Mareep is now the hit of the web, thanks to the hilarious image above, posted by Twitch’s very own Skooch.
As Polygon reports, Skooch arranged a party for his girlfriend for her birthday, aided by her friends. The pièce de résistance was a $500 Mareep plushie, which his 4’11,” Pokémon-loving partner appreciated.
Serinide appreciated it a little too much, as it turned out. Chagrined that she now sleeps cuddled up with the Mareep, Skooch unleashed the Tweet that started it all:

Still, all’s well that ends well. As far as Serinide is concerned, there’s room in every happy family for a $500 Mareep plushie. In these scary, uncertain times, it’s tough to argue with that one.
Thanks for bringing the world the laugh it needed at the moment, Skooch. This is also the most popular a Mareep has ever been, so that’s a nice bonus too. We don’t know which obscure Pokémon is going to hit the headlines next, but one thing’s for sure: we can’t wait to find out.
