Freya is a Vanir goddess who the god of war, Kratos, and his son, Atreus encounter in God of War. Although her introduction made it appear like she was just a normal witch living in the words, it is later revealed that she is so much more than that. Freya is a warm presence in the game. She often helps Kratos and Atreus out, until the inevitable events of the final conflict.
Freya as a character, like all the other characters in the game, is a very interesting one. There are things about her that aren’t fully revealed to the players and uncovering them is a rewarding feeling – especially to those who are in love with this game and this series.
10 Freya = Frigg Explanation
The reveal about Freya being Baldur’s mother came as a surprise even to most who are familiar with Norse mythology. This is because, as far as anyone knows, Baldur is the son of Odin and Frigg, not Odin and Freya. The game instead explains that Freya and Frigg are actually the same people.
This idea is actually not exclusive to the game. For years it’s been something a lot of historians and scholars have actually played around with. Many theorize that Freya and Frigg are actually one and the same due to their similarities and the game simply ran away with this theory.
9 Freya’s Necklace Reveals A Secret
At this point, it is known within the community that Freya is Baldur’s mother. However, back when the game was just recently released, this reveal is something that came as an absolute shock to many.
It is such an integral part of the story, knowing it before playing the game is an awful spoiler that will almost ruin the experience. If you’re capable of reading runes, that’s exactly what’s going to happen to you. Freya’s necklace has Baldur’s name written on it in runes, and it can be seen way before their relationship is revealed in the game.
8 Freya’s Boar
In the game, Freya is shown to be very friendly and kind to everyone around her, including animals. Well, unless you murder her son, of course. In any case, one of the creatures Freya is extremely friendly towards is a boar named Hildsvini.
If the story of this boar is the same as its story in the Old Norse poem called Hyndluljóð, then this boar’s real identity is Óttar, Freya’s student. In the game, Freya says Hildsvini has the ability to shape-shift, which would make sense if the boar is indeed Óttar.
7 Freya Already Knew Who Kratos Was Before They Even Met
In the game, Freya calls Kratos by his first name. This is very interesting considering Kratos never introduces himself to her. She did know that Kratos was a god, but knowing his name exactly is a very interesting piece of information about her.
Freya is a Vanir goddess, who apparently has the ability to speak with all living things, including plants and trees. With this in mind, it’s not very surprising to consider that she already knew who Kratos was before they even met.
6 Freya’s Tattoos
Freya’s arm is covered in tattoos. When you first meet her, the tattoos on her arm appear very faded to the point that it is almost invisible. However, as you progress through the story, Freya’s tattoos will become darker. By the end of the game, her tattoos are very dark and clear.
The reason for this is unknown, but it is speculated that this is because of her magic. At the beginning of the game, Freya says that she has not used the Old magic in a while. Moving forward, it is something she continuously does to help Kratos and Atreus, among other things. The appearance of her tattoos could be tied to her magic usage.
5 The Huldra Brothers Hide From Her
One very interesting piece of information revolving around Freya is how the Huldra brothers seem to always disappear whenever she’s around. The first instance of this was when she catches up to Kratos and Atreus at the Black Breath.
On their way down the mountain, Atreus tells her about Sindri who’s at the base of the mountain, but she says she didn’t see anyone. Brok will also disappear from his workshop when they pass it by. It’s one of the mysteries in the game that is still unanswered.
4 Her Sword Is With Her At All Times
According to Mimir, Freya is now unable to fight, harm, and kill others because Odin took away her warrior spirit. It’s part of Odin’s punishment after Freya decided to break off their marriage, on top of being trapped in Midgard.
Despite this, Freya carries a sword at her back at all times. She never uses it either on account of her being robbed of her warrior spirit. Perhaps it is her way of holding on to her past as a warrior, leader of the Vanir, and Queen of the Valkyries.
3 Her Valkyrie Wings
In the game, Kratos and Atreus encounter a group of female warriors known as the Valkyries, who are trapped in unnatural physical forms. After freeing all the Valkyries, both must then face and free the Queen of the Valkyries Sigrun, who is the toughest boss fight in the game.
If Sigrun was tough, one can only imagine how powerful Freya must really be. It is later revealed by Mimir that Freya, back when she was married to Odin, was the original leader and queen of the Valkyries. At the end of the game, Mimir remarks that Freya approached him while Kratos and Atreus were in Jotunheim, asking him for information about her Valkyrie Wings and warrior spirit.
2 Freya Has Other Children
The game only reveals and highlights Freya and Baldur’s mother and child relationship. She also makes no mention of any other children. However, in Norse mythology, Freya actually has two daughters named Hnoss and Gersemi.
Since in this universe it is acknowledged that Freya and Frigg are the same individuals, this means Freya also has another son by the name of Hodr, a blind god. In Norse mythology, Hodr is acknowledged as the younger brother of Baldur by Frigg and Odin.
1 Freya’s Protection
Before Kratos and Atreus depart after meeting with Freya for the first time, she offers a protection spell on them to hide them from the gods. Interestingly, the spell Freya uses and the runes that appear on Kratos and Atreus’s necks are actual spells and symbols in Norse mythology.
The mark she leaves on the pair’s necks is called Aegishjalmur, also known as The Helm of Awe. This is considered to be one of the most powerful protection spells in Norse mythology. While applying the mark, she utters “Leyna,” which roughly translates to “to hide” or “conceal.”
