With only a month left before PlayStation 4 owners can finally get their hands on God of War, Sony’s flagship title has recently been making the marketing rounds. With the embargos lifts, fans are getting a wealth of new information about the action title including the revamped combat mechanics with director Cory Barlog even going as far as to compare the action to the tough as nails Dark Souls series. A lengthy gameplay video also released this week, giving fans a good look at the game, though according to some, this is only a very small percentage of the entire package.
Geoff Keighley, longtime games media member and the creator and host of the annual Game Awards ceremony, recently went hand son with the game and came out of the experience a big believer in the new God of War. Keighley noted that while the game retains familiar elements, much of it has been evolved from the combat and puzzles to the visuals and the story. The two and a half hour demo contained a lot of content including a look at the progression and new RPG mechanics, though Sony Santa Monica revealed that it was only about 5% of the entire experience.
Even with an influx of new information, Sony Santa Monica has made sure to prevent media members from sharing much regarding the story. Fans have a lot of questions coming into this game due to the fact that previous games placed a heavy emphasis on the Greek pantheon of Gods, monsters, and legends such as Hercules and this latest entry has found Kratos in the Norse realm of Midgard. Not only that, Kratos is now a father to a boy named Atreus, someone who is clearly eager to help out and learn from his father.
Sony Santa Monica hasn’t been shy about the fact that many of the mechanics and systems fans have come to utilize or expect from the franchise have either been changed or outright removed from this latest game in the series. Not only can players partake in side quests as well as optional boss fights, the jump button has been completely removed which likely limits the amount of platforming in this new game. In another surprising turn of events, Sony Santa Monica has also confirmed that traditional mechanics like quick time events, camera cuts, and cutscenes have all been removed as well.
God of War launches on April 20, 2018 exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
