PlayStation fans looking forward to the next God of War game would love even a bit of information about the sequel. Yet, for now, the sequel’s development hasn’t even been confirmed. God of War developer Sony Santa Monica Studio is definitely hard at work on something, though. In the meantime, God of War fans will have to settle for what is confirmed. Such being the newly announced God of War comic from Dark Horse.

What’s most exciting about God of War: Fallen God is that it’s a prequel to the game released in 2018. It’ll take place in the years between God of War 3 and God of War, the time when Kratos rediscovered himself. In fact, God of War: Fallen God apparently takes place right after Kratos defeats Zeus and Athena in God of War 3.

“Believing himself to be finally free of his bondage, [Kratos] sets sail for the desert in an attempt to distance himself from his home and his shame only to find his rage and guilt close behind,” reads the description for God of War: Fallen God provided by Dark Horse. It continues, noting that “a war against oneself is unwinnable, and only invites madness.” Odds are Kratos will encounter other enemies along the way. It is a comic book after all. But it will be interesting to see how well the comic captures an introspective Kratos, too.

God of War: Fallen God will be written by Chris Roberson, whose previous work includes the previous God of War comic and various work in Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1953-1955. He has an extensive relationship with Dark Horse, including with licensed properties like Aliens.

Doing art on God of War: Fallen God will be Tony Parker, who partnered with Chris Roberson on their previous God of War comic. Parker is an Eisner-nominated artist perhaps best known for Mayday and This Damned Band.

Unlike the first God of War comic, which was set prior to the God of War game but didn’t expand much beyond the game’s story, God of War: Fallen God is an exciting opportunity.  The years between the God of War 3 and God of War games are a subject most fans very much want to hear about. While Kratos’ biggest secrets will likely be reserved for God of War sequel game, the comic will hopefully explore themed and adventures that will build on and make the games all the better.

God of War: Fallen God’s first issue releases June 24.
