The lead writer and director for God of War thinks that Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford is treating his employees poorly for denying them promised bonus payments.

We’ve discussed at length the almost cartoonish villainy that Gearbox’s CEO has been up to over the years, but we’ll give you a brief rundown on the most recent controversy. When Gearbox embarked on Borderlands 3, they hired a whole bunch of devs and gave them below-market salaries. In return, he promised them profit-sharing in the form of big bonus payments if Borderlands 3 did well.

Borderlands 3 did in fact sell quite well–the best the franchise had ever sold–but when it came time to start cutting cheques, suddenly Borderlands 3’s sales were “below expectations.”

That’s a double-cross any way you shake it, but worse, Pitchford reportedly had a take it or leave it attitude and told upset employees at a meeting that they were welcome to quit if they thought their remuneration was insufficient.

Yeah, that seems comically awful. God of War director Cory Barlog agreed.

“This is a sh— thing to do to the actual people responsible for the things you make," Barlog noted in a now-deleted tweet. He’s not alone, as the vast majority of analysts and game devs condemned the move on Twitter.

One wonders when this sort of thing will finally come back to bite Gearbox.
