Less than a month remains until God of War launches on PlayStation 4, so fans of the longstanding franchise may very well be ready to get their hands on the game. With its release date approaching, it’s pretty much a waiting game now (although there won’t be much waiting in the game). But that doesn’t mean news concerning the third-person action-adventure game has just died off.

In fact, God of War creative director, Cory Barlog, recently addressed the idea of rebooting the series in an interview. On one hand, it would make sense since the latest installment moves the game from a Greek setting to a Norse setting, but on the other, as Barlog asked, “Why would you ever throw that away? It’s like a decade of character development. You can’t.”

Moreover, with all the changes coming to the newest installment of the franchise, a reboot of the series was never seriously an option for Barlog, especially considering how the first few games served as a background for Kratos. With the humanization of the main character being addressed in the upcoming game, Barlog also addressed the similarities in the growth of his team and Kratos, which a reboot would essentially nullify.

The first few games, according to Barlog, were about topping the competition, not unlike the rage machine Kratos toppling the Greek gods. They stayed up late, made numerous last-minute changes, and underwent issues of youth as Kratos did. However, with the benefit of hindsight and the addition of the new members, the team just isn’t the same. As the development team has grown, so has Kratos, and the whole franchise is an example of growth on top of that – exemplified with a more mature Kratos and his son, Atreus.

A reboot would ultimately nullify the entire growth of the game’s development team as well as Kratos himself, which is one of many reasons Barlog may have avoided rebooting the series. Now that the God of War has gone gold, fans don’t have much longer to wait to witness Kratos’s growth for themselves.

God of War is set to release on April 20, 2018, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
