The optional realm of Niflheim shouldn’t be trifled with in God of War, containing many great rewards at the cost of hours upon hours of battle. Having to collect four language ciphers before the realm is even available, only the most relentless will make it all the way through the maze. The challenge is hard enough without the realm tears that taunt the brave players along the way; if they’re opened, some very high-level enemies will have to be dealt with.
With great risk comes great reward, some of the best-hidden items and attacks lay on the other side of those enemies. Unfortunately, that’s not all, players will need Anchor of Fog to open the tears and claim their spoils for winning. This requires one of the most grind intensive sections of the game; some serious man-hours will have to be invested to even make it to the demanding fights that lie ahead. Luckily, pioneers have done it before and left some handy tips in their wake.
5 Equip For Battle
One of the key components in making it through all the room is dressing for the part, focusing on mist resistance and healing. Even the most skilled warriors are bound to take a few licks powering through the maze, the mist resist being a must-have. Niflheim Mist armor will come in handy even after the task due to its healing properties, allowing fans to extend their rage-filled rush for even longer.
Using the 9 pieces you find in the workshop, players can craft 3 versions of the chest, gauntlet, and waist armor. Integral to the longevity of the run, having to factor in the mist will end in near-certain death. Something that the eager player can’t afford if they’re to complete the task in a timely fashion.
4 Entry Stone
To get to Ivaldi’s Workshop, players have to pay 500 mist echoes to get the Niflheim Entry Stone from Sindri. This will open up the workshop and make all the resources to get Kratos mist ready available, including 9 pieces of Ivaldi’s Rusted Armor. Gathering that amount will take a few runs of the first room, make sure not to rush ahead unless a breathless battle is the end goal.
Once inside, there are further chests to be unlocked for an increasing amount of mist echo. Leading up to two 7500 echo chests that will make the maze many times easier, only for those willing to put in the runs to get that amount. It will take a considerable amount of time to rack up those numbers but Anchor of Fog won’t be a daunting task anymore with the upgraded gear in the premium chests.
3 Clear The Chests
Though it is supposed to be a total grind, the more chests you open on a run, the chance raises that Kratos will find an Anchor of Fog. Seeing as only three of them are required, this will significantly cut down the time and number of pointless enemies that have to be taken out.
This means purposefully navigating through trap doors to miss either one or both of the main rooms until the very end, maximizing the player’s chances at striking gold. Utilize the side chambers to uncover extra chests and some side passages that allow the player to bounce back and forth, stacking the odds in their favor.
2 Retreat If Needed
Whether it’s going back to bank the mist echo with Sindri or resetting the maze monsters, don’t be afraid to restart. Suffering a series of annoying enemies or pushing Kratos in the name of ego is a one-way ticket to a very long ride. Starting over always ends up being faster than forcing the way through a group of particularly pigheaded enemies, especially with what’s at stake if Kratos goes down for the count.
One of the most challenging and frustrating things about Niflheim is the loss of mist echoes if the player dies. Forcing players to admit weakness at the time and return to home base, or hours of hard work can be lost in a stubborn attempt at victory. As good as the game is, no one wants to waste their time replaying old mazes because they couldn’t admit a rest was needed.
1 Face The Valkyrie
While there’s the boss fight to get through in one of the rooms, the other contains a Valkyrie. Not a fight players want to take on unless they are fully prepared and not too badly injured from the previous battle. This is also where the armor comes in, allowing players to fight freely without restriction. A Valkyrie is hard enough to fight without the threat of death coming from the air, the sharp wings pose enough threat as it is.
It will also give players two chances at the Anchor of Fog, halving the time it will take to stack the item. While a Valkyrie battle doesn’t sound like a great plan after all that, the battle-hardened can make it through and double their chances at a good grab.
