There’s no doubt that God of War fans are eagerly anticipating the game’s release date in 2018, as it will give them a chance to assume the role as the Ghost of Sparta in his first adventure made specifically for the PlayStation 4. Of course, since there’s still plenty of time left before the title launches next year, the publisher Sony and developer Santa Monica Studio have decided to fill in some of the gaps in characters’ biographies, with the companies having now released a fresh video revealing more about Kratos’ son, Atreus.

As seen below in the God of War video named “A Call From the Wilds at PSX,” Sony and Santa Monica Studio offer a guided tour of promotional art from PlayStation Experience 2017 that tells a bit of Atreus’ backstory, and provides some interesting insight into his unique skills (archery and language), abilities (telepathic communication with animals), and first encounter with real danger. As it so happens, Atreus’ capacity to psychically commune with wildlife leads him out into the forest after he hears a creature crying out for help, causing him to confront a true enemy.

The call of distress Atreus hears is from a doe dying in the snow, but the boy’s search for and discovery of the animal causes him to lose his way in the forest. Nevertheless, he assists the deer in its final death throes by calming the creature with his voice and reciting old Norse rites to help it pass away peacefully. After the doe ceases to be, Atreus notices that there’s far too much blood on the ground to have come solely from the animal.

A trail of crimson leads Atreus deeper into the woods to a hunter who has been slaughtered by two Draugr–that is, undead monsters from Norse mythology. While doing battle with the Draugr, Atreus is eventually found by his father, who seems to handily defeat the Norse zombies after grabbing them by the throat and subduing them. Once the beasts are beaten, Kratos’ son sees his father right before passing out from a wound inflicted from the fight.

Once the narrator has finished performing this excellently produced piece of backstory for God of War, the video shows off physical versions of the main characters’ gear–leather and fur armor, Kratos’ magic axe, Atreus’ bow and quiver of arrows, and much more. All things considered, if the forthcoming game’s plot manages to exhibit the same pacing, intensity, and sense of wonder as Sony and Santa Monica Studio’s “A Call from the Wilds” tale, then not only will God of War be the “most brutal” entry in the series, but also the most engaging and heartfelt installment, too.

God of War is set to release in 2018 for PlayStation 4.
