This year’s Change the Game challenge from Google switches things up by handing out free game development training for aspiring young game makers.
Every year, Google hosts a contest to see who can make a great new mobile game. It’s part of the company’s Change the Game initiative which seeks to empower women in gaming both as players and as developers.
This year’s contest is slightly different. With COVID-19 shutting down schools across the country, Google knows that teens have a lot more free time than they expected. The winner of the Change the Game challenge will get a free crash course in game development hosted by Girls Make Games, an organization that encourages girls to get into game development and change the games industry (for the better, obv).
Applications will stay open from May 11 to July 31. However, you’ll want to get your application in early to take part in the free games workshops hosted by Girls Make Games. This 4-session crash course in game development will start in June and run through the summer, and by the end of it, you’ll have a finished, playable game prototype.
Finalists in the challenge also get some sweet Google swag, a certificate of completion, and a cool new Chromebook to keep developing their game on.
Last year’s winners also had their finished games posted on the Google Play store, and as much as we love PC and console gaming, mobile is where the money is these days.
