For many League of Legends players, the learning curve in-game is a journey filled with hardships. But even in Season 10, the most difficult thing to adjust to isn’t a certain champion or role. As veterans can attest, the hardest thing year after year is dealing with certain members of the community.
Because of its rising reputation and accessibility over the years, League of Legends is played by over 100 million individuals globally. At the same time, a large part of the community has become well known for toxic behavior far worse than the playerbases of other games. The harassment can get so bad that various streamers, personalities, and even celebrities outside of the game have commented on the issue including professional basketball player Gordon Hayward.
When asked if League or NBA players were more toxic during a Twitch stream, Hayward immediately stated League players were 100,000-percent worse. Furthermore, Hayward exclaimed that he couldn’t imagine playing on an NBA team that displayed the same level of toxicity during a basketball game. He also elaborated that such a group equivalent to the League of Legends community would flame teammates over issues like missed 3-pointers, small forward and center position skill differences, and start trash-talking during a timeout.
Despite the fitting comparison, there are several reasons why this toxicity is only in League and cannot be transferred elsewhere easily. The game takes place entirely online and the vast majority of players will never encounter their flamers or harassed teammates in real life.
