Since its debut over four years ago, HBO’s Game of Thrones has created a cultural phenomenon unlike any other. It’s shocking deaths, complex characters, and deep mythology has kept us glued to our TVs every Sunday night and venting on the Internet the following week.
But, if there was one element to Game of Thrones that stands out above all else it’s the show’s stylized intro. Not only is Game of Thrones title credits an important learning tool — helping viewers discern Riverrun from Braavos — it’s just plain cool, both in its design and its use of catchy music.
As a result, many have tried to adopt the intro’s style to fit a wealth of different entertainment media, but the latest involves Super Mario World and is quite impressive. Here, fledgling filmmaker and YouTuber Nicksplosion FX tries to put his own spin on a concept that has been done to death over the past 4 years. Check it out in the video above.
Back in early April we featured a Game of Thrones-style intro for Skyrim that was more homage than parody, using the original intro’s diorama-esque design as inspiration. It also required a fair bit of CGI animation to boot, much more than this Super Mario video. You can watch that video here.
That being said, what’s impressive about this Super Mario World Game of Thrones intro is the way it “recreates” some familiar locales from Nintendo’s classic game. It’s also just a cool concept that smartly uses the Super Mario World over world map to mimic the style of HBO’s show.
Chances are, with Telltale Games’ forthcoming adaptation of Game of Thrones the TV series, we will finally get a true video game version of the intro credits. And while that game will likely garner a lot of attention like Telltale’s The Walking Dead — another video game adaptation of a popular series — and put to rest the video game-ified version of the intro, it’s cool to see what homages creative gamers can deliver in the mean time.
What other games would you like to see get the Game of Thrones intro treatment? What is your favorite Super Mario Bros. locale?
